HCU basketball star Darius Lee tragically lost his life in an act of聽random gun violence on June 20, 2022. Lee, who was home in聽Harlem, N.Y. visiting family over the summer, was at a park with聽friends when gunfire erupted with an errant bullet striking and聽killing the 21-year-old.
Lee was on track to graduate with a bachelor鈥檚 degree this December聽while playing his final season with the Huskies.聽Last year, he was named the school鈥檚 Robbie聽Robertson Male Student-Athlete of the Year聽and earned second-team all-Southland聽Conference honors. He led the team in聽scoring and rebounding and finished the聽season ranked seventh in the nation in聽steals per game. Lee also tied the school聽record for points in a single game when he聽scored 52 in the Huskies鈥� 149-144 four-overtime聽victory against McNeese.
The HCU men鈥檚 basketball team聽wore black patches that read聽鈥淒 Lee鈥� on all of their uniforms聽this season in honor of their slain聽teammate. On Nov. 21, HCU and聽Rice played each other in the聽鈥淒arius Lee Memorial Classic鈥� at聽7 p.m. at Rice鈥檚 Tudor Fieldhouse.
